Purpose

Forestry professionals and landowners (private and industrial) in the Southeast are increasingly interested in managing forestland to enhance habitats for wildlife species. This course aims to provide technical information on specific techniques used to enhance and preserve wildlife habitat on forested land. Topics will include managing forest stands for wildlife and timber, managing for white-tailed deer and game bird species in the Southeast, techniques for controlling wild pig populations, things to consider when planting food plots and other wildlife plantings, and other principles and applications of wildlife-habitat management techniques.

 

Who Will Benefit?

Private and state foresters, loggers, members of forestry associations, forestry and wildlife professionals (consultants and managers), forest landowners interested in wildlife management on their lands, realtors, and wildlife biologists.

 

Instructors

Dr. James T. Johnson has a Ph.D. in wildlife ecology and management from the University of Georgia and has been managing private lands with the goal of producing quality whitetails for the past 20 years, including his families farm in Jackson County where he holds the current archery record whitetail since 2016.  He is a Certified Wildlife Biologist and the Continuing Education Program Director for the Warnell School and has been a member of the UGA Deer Lab for the past decade. 

 

Dr. Karl V. Miller is an Emeritus Professor of Wildlife Ecology and Management at the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. Miller’s research focuses on the habitat requirements and management of white-tailed deer and on the impact of forest management practices on deer and other wildlife. He is co-author of the books Quality Whitetails, Forest Plants of the Southeast and Their Wildlife Uses, and Quality Food Plots.

 

Matt Goode is a wildlife biologist with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources—Wildlife Resources Division.  Matt provides landowners with technical assistance through the Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP) to help meet the goals and objectives of their property. Matt services the east central and northeast portions of the state. 

 

Scott Thackston is a Staff Forester and the Water Quality Program Coordinator with the Georgia Forestry Commission. Scott is an avid outdoorsman with decades of experience living, working, and hunting in the Southeast.

 

Ryan Martin received his Bachelor of Science in Environmental & Natural Resource Management with an emphasis in Wildlife & Fisheries Biology from Clemson University in 2017. Joining the South Carolina program of USDA APHIS Wildlife Services after graduation, where he worked to resolve beaver conflicts in conjunction with SC DOT. Moving to Georgia in 2018 he expanded his skillset to include feral swine control, urban whitetail deer management, gamebird nest predator management as well as mitigating avian conflicts and wildlife disease surveillance throughout the state.
